Cold Weather Can Be Hard on the Elderly, Tips for a Safe and Warm Winter

Elderly Care in Rockford MI

With the joy and magic of the holidays often comes the chill and dangers of winter, especially for those living in colder climates.  While winter Elderly-Care-Rockford-MIweather can be hard on everyone, it can be especially dangerous for the elderly.  If you have an elderly loved one, make sure you keep the following tips in mind for safe and happy winter.

1.  Wear Warm Clothing.

While it is better to stay indoors during very cold days, there are often many reasons why seniors need to get out.  Quick trips to the doctor’s office, pharmacy, or grocery store can be risky if they are not properly dressed.  Hats, gloves, scarves, coats, and boots are necessary in freezing temperatures and dressing in layers helps keep warmth in.  If a trip outdoors in necessary, try to keep it brief, even when dressed appropriately.

2.  Play it Safe on the Road.

Encourage your loved one to avoid driving altogether during winter storms and very snowy days and to make sure roads have been plowed and salted before heading out.  It is important to keep the gas tank full in the winter and to keep some emergency supplies in the car just in case.  Extra clothing, gloves, a shovel, and a flashlight are excellent things to have in a winter car emergency kit.

3.    Prevent Falls.

Again, it is best to avoid going outdoors when the weather is less than favorable.  If there is ice on the driveway and/or sidewalks, make sure your loved one is wearing proper footwear to avoid slips and falls.  If they just need to step out for the newspaper, for example, it is safer if someone accompanies them.

4.    Keep Driveways and Walkways Clear.

A great way you can help your elderly loved one during the winter is by shoveling their driveways and walkways.  A clear driveway will make it easier if they need to leave the house for any reason.  If you can’t do the job yourself, you may want to consider hiring a plowing service to do it whenever the snow falls.

5.    Ensure Proper Home Heating.

Having your loved one’s furnace inspected before winter hits is a great idea.  It is also important to encourage them not to use space heaters, wood or gas burning fireplaces, or gas stoves to heat the home.  These can lead to fires or even toxic levels of carbon monoxide gas in the home.

Winter can be a tough time of year for seniors, especially those living in colder climates.  If you have an elderly loved one, winter is a great time to plan frequent visits so that you can help them with necessary errands, snow removal, and so that you can provide them with much needed company during a time when they are likely to feel a little isolated.
