Have you ever had to ask somebody to repeat what they said to you because you didn’t quite hear? Most of us have had instances in our lives where, even though the person talking to us is in the same room, we may not hear what they say. It could be that a loud truck is rumbling by outside or the TV is on. It could also be that you may be experiencing some type of hearing loss.Senior Care East Grand Rapids MI

Research has shown that people who live in major metropolitan areas, work around loud equipment for a majority of their life, or listen to music with headphones end up developing some type of hearing loss. When it comes to senior care, it’s a good idea to understand what it might be like to be dealing with hearing loss.

You may be providing senior care services to somebody who constantly asks you to repeat yourself and this might be getting you frustrated. When you get frustrated, step back from the situation and try to understand things from the patient’s perspective.

Wear earmuffs for a day. Even though it’s not cold out (or even if it is, wear them inside) you should put on some type of earmuffs that will deaden sound around you. If you don’t have any type of earmuffs, use headphones or, in the event you don’t have headphones, use earbuds and turn classical music on at a low volume. The idea here is to block out a significant portion of the sound around you.

Now try to interact with people that you normally do. You will likely have to ask them to repeat themselves over and over. You can certainly cheat and lift the earmuffs away from your ears for a moment, but try to resist that.

This will give you a small sample of what it is like when you can’t hear the people around you or talking. It should also provide you with a little bit more empathy if you are having a conversation with somebody else in the room with the elderly patient.

Hearing is one of the five senses that we have and that, along with our vision, are two of the most important. For somebody who is dealing with hearing loss, try to avoid losing your patience with them when they’re constantly saying, “Heh? What did you say?”

Senior care should be empathetic and the best way to reach that level of empathy is to give yourself hearing loss for one day. Don’t worry, it’s only temporary. That’s not the case for somebody dealing with true hearing loss.
