Group Activities and Elder Care: Staying Fit with Friends

Elder Care in Cascade MI

Stacy had recently turned 82 years old and, fortunately, she still had many of her friends alive and well. During a recent medical appointment, her doctor mentioned the need for Stacy to get a bit more exercise to remain physically fit. At 82, Stacy didn’t realize she still had to worry about physical conditioning.

April is Physical Wellness Month and as her Doctor pointed out, there are many things people of all ages can do to Elder Care in Cascade MIimprove their physical wellness. Encouraging friends and even family members to join her in her desire to remain fit and get plenty of exercise could be a great way to not only get the right level of exercise but to also remain emotionally connected to others, which can be tremendously beneficial as a part of elder care.

Group activities can provide many benefits. First and foremost, they offer people an opportunity to be within a social setting. Humans are social creatures and as a result, they do better for the most part when they have an opportunity to be socially engaged with other people.

Stacy decided to call her friends on the phone and arrange a meeting. At that meeting, she told them what her doctor had said and two of her friends mentioned they had heard similar things from their doctor. That’s when they all decided to get together on a regular basis, every other day, to get some exercise and stay fit.

One day they all agreed to go to a local park, as long as the weather was nice and it was warm enough. They would walk at a brisker pace than they were used to, but only so fast as to make sure everyone was comfortable and safe. They would meet at a local mall and walk around inside if the weather was bad.

On Wednesdays, Stacy had found an experienced yoga instructor who took on elderly clients. They booked this instructor for a private class with just them and that helped them get a great deal of exercise and stay fit.

On Friday, the group chose to begin playing bocce, shuffleboard, or even badminton from time to time, so long as the weather cooperated. They hadn’t played these games in years and just getting together was an emotional boost for all of them. Along the way, they all improved their physical health and well-being, too.
