Are you trying to help your elderly loved one sleep better? Sometimes sleep eludes the elderly. When this happens to your elderly loved one, they might feel depressed or anxious throughout the daytime. In addition, not getting enough sleep, can even increase your elderly loved one’s risk of getting sick. The good thing is that there are many ways you and other caregivers can help your elderly loved one to get better sleep.
Getting Exercise Daily
If your elderly loved one starts exercising daily, this can help them to get better sleep at night. Research shows that exercising helps people to get natural energy. In addition, finding the right time for exercise can help someone to sleep better. You and caregivers can help your elderly loved one find out when exercising fits best in their day.
No Daytime Naps
Has your elderly loved one been napping in the daytime? If so, this can cause them to have more difficulties falling asleep at night. Sometimes, naps can be helpful. Generally, it is only helpful for the elderly if the naps are 20 to 30 minutes in length. Any longer than this and your elderly loved one won’t feel tired when it is time for bed. If your elderly loved one needs someone to wake them up at the proper time, you or one of their caregivers can do that.
No Alcohol or Caffeine
Research also shows that alcohol and caffeine can affect someone’s sleep. If your elderly loved one drinks alcohol or caffeine too late in the day, this can cause many sleeping issues. It can cause them not to fall asleep when they should. It can cause them to wake up numerous times throughout the night, as well. If you can convince your elderly loved one to quit drinking alcohol, after a few days to a few weeks, they should be able to sleep better at night. In addition, your elderly loved one should limit the amount of caffeine they have each day. They should also only drink caffeine earlier in the day.
These are some of the ways that you and caregivers can help your elderly loved one to get better sleep at night. If your elderly loved one can follow every one of these tips, they can improve their sleep significantly. Whether your elderly loved one is not falling asleep well or they aren’t able to stay asleep at night, encourage them to use all of these tips. Even if they just start with one of these tips, that can help a great deal.
