One way to help your loved one much more often is to have her move from her home to yours. While some loved ones might see this as a perfect solution, you might be surprised if your loved one isn’t convinced. Use these tips to determine if moving in with you is right for her.
Evaluate Her Current Living Situation.
Take an objective look at your loved one’s current living situation. Are there safety problems that she needs to have addressed? She may also run into mobility issues, especially if she uses a wheelchair or other assistive device that requires more space than she has. Listen carefully to your loved one and discuss whether she feels safe in her home now.
Evaluate Her Potential Future Living Situation.
What situation is your loved one going to move into assuming she agrees to the move? Will she have her own room and bathroom? Having the right amount of space is essential for her to feel as if she isn’t cramped. Look at whether this is truly a safety improvement for your loved one or if it’s just more convenient for you.
Avoid Dictating to Your Loved One.
One thing that your loved one doesn’t need is for you to demand or dictate that this is the solution that she’s going forward with now. If she really doesn’t want this move, then trying to force her into it may make her dig in her heels even more. No matter how obvious this is as a solution for you, your loved one may need much more time to get on board with the idea.
Give Your Loved One Plenty of Time to Adjust to the Idea.
The more time that you can give your loved one to adjust, the better. In some cases, you may be forced into taking action because your loved one injures herself or the home she’s in is just not safe at all. But this is more likely to be a rare occasion. Do what you can to give your loved one as much time as she needs.
