These are simple journals where you keep track of what you’re grateful for on a daily basis. But some people find these types of journals to be difficult to manage on a regular basis for a variety of reasons. If you’re thinking about giving up, here are some ideas.
Make it Easy to Access
One of the quickest ways to run into trouble with any sort of journaling is to make the activity difficult to do. If your notebook isn’t easy to get to or you’re finding other problems with accessing anything about the journal, even with things like finding the time to write out your entry, then you might have to make some changes. Keeping a running note in your smartphone might be your gratitude journal. Don’t get stuck on one idea of how it has to be.
Change Your Approach a Little
If you’re holding yourself to rigid rules about keeping a gratitude journal, that can be a big turnoff. Look at what your expectations are and what you’re requiring for yourself about this activity. You really don’t have to follow any rules at all, especially if they don’t work for you. Take some time and think about what you want to get out of keeping a gratitude journal and then change your approach accordingly.
Change Your Focus
One of the reasons you might be running into trouble is that you’re saying the same things over and over. You could also find that what you’re grateful for focuses only on one topic, person, or thing. Take a minute to expand your point of view a little bit. Are these things that you’re truly grateful for or that you think you should be grateful for? Doing a bit of a focus reset can help you to get going again.
Give Yourself Permission to Give Up
But if you’ve tried a lot of different ideas and you’re still having trouble, it could be that a gratitude journal just isn’t for you. There may be other types of journaling activities that are a better fit for you and that give you the results that you want to see. You don’t have to stick with something that isn’t working for you.
Gratitude journals can be incredibly helpful, if you’re actually using them. If you’re contemplating giving up, you might be better served by another type of activity.
